What are these game skins?
These are additional in-game graphics that you can apply to your characters in video games. There are two ways players can get a skin, either by purchasing it or by completing in-game challenges.
First game to have a game skin was Sonic adventure. Soon after Runescape, Elder Scroll & many others followed this trend. Fortnite made an estimated $2.4B from skin sales alone. Game skins allowed each player to be unique & stand out from the rest of the players. Skin element brought microtransaction. Players could also trade, buy or sell these skins either inside the game’s in-built marketplace or on other marketplaces. Over time these skins became collectibles. Problem was there was no governance over the quantity or rarity. If the game devs decided to create more skins they could do it with a click of a button. Creating more supply therefore devaluing all previously created skins. Supply and demand. The missing link was the blockchain.
Meet Worlds First NFT Skins?
By now I’m sure you must have heard it all before. Worlds first NFT’s. Cryptopunks, Etherrocks, Curio Cards, Rare Pepes etc.. But did you know that Decentraland in 2019 has created the worlds first NFT skins? This collection is named Decentraland Wearables. Two different blockchain were utilised, ethereum & polygon matic. Wearables on the ethereum blockchain are the first & oldest wearables in the world. Often referred to as L1 Wearables. Wearables on the polygon matic blockchain are refereed to as L2 Wearables.

Since everyone is going crazy for historic NFT’s, I feel like worlds first NFT skins have been overlooked. Utility wise these skins are excellent because any other NFT is simply a Jpeg according to some however these skin NFT’s can be warn in the game.
